Dialysis
Dialysis or Haemodialysis is a procedure which cleanses
and lters the patient's blood. This is done to excrete
dangerous/toxic waste substances in the
patient’s
metabolism. It eliminates excessive sodium and aids the
body in keeping its chemical substances such as: calcium,
potassium, sodium and chloride.
Dialysis is a must for patients suffering acute kidney failure
with complications and terminal kidney failure. This is the
case where the patient's kidneys
are no longer able to
excrete waste and water, which can worsen the patient's
condition as a whole.
The Haemodialysis Clinic of SHLV tries to serve patients.
With a loving touch so the patients may feel more
comfortable during the blood cleansing procedure.
In a quiet and comfortable room, experienced nurses are
r
eady to help you at anytime during the dialysis process.
You may choose to rest on the bed, or sit comfortably on a
couch while reading your favorite book or
magazine, or
even your office work.
You can watch TV with various choices of local and international
channels and you can eat food of your choice according
to
your doctor's recommendations. We try to make you as
comfortable as possible so that you may feel at home.
The Haemodialysis Clinic of SHLV will help
meet your needs
so you can continue performing your daily activities
independently, by minimizing health problems, so that you
may continue quality living.
Our service helps terminal
kidney failure patients feel more encouraged to live their
lives and assists their efforts to improve/change life
patterns.
Dialysis Process
When you arrive at the Haemodialysis Clinic of SHLV, your
weight will be recorded and noted to see if there has been
any gain since the last dialysis
process. The maximum
weight gain recommended is 5% of dry weight. Your blood
pressure will be measured as well.
On the bed/chair, your arm will be cleansed
with cleansing
liquid to ensure that the injection area is free from infection
factors. A dialysis needle will be inserted and the dialysis
process started.
D
uring the process you will be given anti coagulant substance
according to the prescribed dosage to prevent blood clotting.
Dialysis process can take 4 to 5
hours, 2 to 3 times a week.
After the dialysis process is completed you will be observed
by a nurse for about 20 minutes to ensure you are at to go
home.
When you go you may do your activities as usual.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Mind your uid intake, either water or other drinks. You
also need to mind food consisting of lots of uid, such as
soup, watery food, or food that
stimulates you to drink
(salty/spicy food). Excessive uid intake is dangerous for
your heart and lungs.
- Lessen the use of salt in your diet, because salt
blocks
uid excretion from your body.
- Try to swallow your medicines with food instead of water.
This helps reduce the amount of uid intake.
Operating Hours:
Monday - Saturday, 6.30 am - 6.30 pm; closed on Sundays
and Public Holidays.
Location:
Dialysis Clinic of SHLV is located on the 2nd Floor, Outpatient
Department. For futher information, please contact
Dialysis
Department on (021) 546 0055 Ext : 2201, 2202.
