A periodontist specializes in treating health problems associated with periodontal tissues, including gums and the bones surrounding the teeth.

These definitions led to two main approaches in treatment, namely surgical intervention and dental scaling.
Purposes of Periodontal Medicine
A periodontist provides treatments for various medical issues involving the structures and functions of periodontal tissues, including gums and bones.
Some examples of conditions handled by this specialist are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is inflammation and infection of the gums, whereas periodontitis is a more severe form of infection that affects the gums and the periodontal structures around the base of the teeth.
A periodontist has an in-depth understanding of the treatment and care of those diseases. They can prescribe medications, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or pain relievers, according to the patient’s condition.
In closer detail, a periodontist is able to provide various treatments to maintain gum and dental health, such as controlling dental plaque, removing tartar (teeth scaling), treating bleeding gums, treating gum inflammation, treating loose teeth, performing cosmetic gum surgery and periodontal surgery, and performing dental implants.
